Hi all,

I am building a model of a cylindrical tank filled with water in 3D. Frictionless contact is defined at all surfaces between the water and the tank. When running the input file attached (I replaced the water constitutive model I have with a simple elastic model), it fails in the first time step stating that there is a negative jacobian in a Quad 4 element. I have double checked the mesh file several times and it only contains hex 8 elements. I am wondering how to fix this issue for this specific geometry.

PS: I have tried different geometry and it only works when the thickness of the tank is increased.

Hi Osama,

I ran this with the contact block commented out and it runs fine, so it is probably something in the contact implementation. Your contact block looks fine to me and I don’t see anything immediately wrong. I suggest that you post this in the MOOSE group (note that they moved to GitHub discussions from google groups, so please post it there) so that the TensorMechanics and Contact module developers can help you. Please mention that you are not using any MASTODON-specific objects here. I would also suggest you reproduce this problem for a smaller, may be 2D, mesh.
