Bootstrap Size and Material Design

In the backend > modules > advanced > Bootstrap Size I can specify the width of the module for Bootstrap. From 0 to 12 columns.
I tried it with a custom module, one with an image and one with text. To me it seems not to work. I got modules below each other. not next to each other.
Am I doing something wrong? I thought this was to be able to place modules next to each other. I can do that, by using the col-xx-yy in the Module Class Suffix.
Likewise, I have no idea what Material Design is for. What do you do with it?
