Veterans, military families, and civilian survivors of wars called for an end to international conflicts and needless suffering and death as they gathered Monday afternoon at Christopher Columbus Park on Boston’s downtown waterfront. “Memorial Day is a solemn day of remembrance for those who died in the service of the nation, and I respect that purpose,” said Sev Bruyn, a World War II veteran and professor emeritus at Boston College, as he addressed the crowd. “But I’m also angry that our nation has not woken up to stop that slaughter.” Bruyn was among more than 100 people who came together for Memorial Day for Peace, an event hosted by a coalition of antiwar groups led by the local chapter of Veterans for Peace.
