Tonight’s show will air audio that was recorded on October 20, 2012 at a forum sponsored by the Boston local of Democratic Socialists of America. Speakers included SEIU Political Director Harris Gruman, Mass NOW PAC Chair Christina Knowles, Mass Alliance Deputy Director Jordan Berg Powers, and Dorchester People for Peace activist Jeff Klein.
Harris Gruman is Massachusetts Political Director for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). He is also a former Director of Massachusetts Neighbor to Neighbor, and has been involved in political work both at the state and federal election for many years. He was named by Campaigns and Politics magazine as one of the Top 100 Influencers in Massachusetts. Harris talks about the how the deficit should really be viewed as three deficits, and how the two parties differ in their approaches to managing this issue.
Christina Knowles is the chair of the Political Action Committee for the Massachusetts chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW). She was also named on Campaigns and Politics magazine as one of the Top 100 Influencers in Massachusetts, so we had two of the 100 in this forum. She talks mostly about state, but also federal issues, especially as they relate to women and the GLBT community.
Jordan Berg Powers is Deputy Director of Mass Alliance, which is a progressive coalition of 22 labor, civil rights, environmental and community groups. The Mass Alliance focuses primarily on getting progressives elected to the Massachusetts State legislature. Jordan talks about the importance of state elections in grooming candidates who are real progressives, and how only by supporting good people early in their political careers can we hope someday to have more progressive candidates at the national level.
Jeff Klein is a retired machinist and local union president, who is now active with the Dorchester People for Peace. He has traveled widely in the Middle East, and published numerous articles on the Israel-Palestine conflict. He talks, among other things, about the Budget for All referendum that we also heard about on the FSU Program a couple of weeks ago.
