Lisa Wolfe and I went to the Sedge Meadow location in Wayland today, starting from about noon to 1:30. It was hot (high 80s/low 90s) and very sunny, mostly calm with more breezes coming later in the visit.
We saw:
6 Orange Sulphur
14 Clouded Sulphur
10 Pearl Crescent
17 Peck's Skipper
3 Tawny-edged Skipper
10 Pearl Crescent
7 Common Ringlet
1 Tiger Swallowtail (sp)
1 Eastern Tailed-blue
1 Mourning Cloak
1 Azure (sp)
1 American Copper
10 grass skippers (sp)
1 Red Admiral
95 individuals, 14 identified species.
The unidentified grass skippers were probably either Peck's or Tawny-edged.
Most of the butterflies were seen on or near the purple clover and vetch. We saw a lot of milkweed that should be in bloom soon, at which point I expect we will see even more butterflies.
There has already been a good response from Wayland residents who want to go on this field trip, so please let me know if you are planning to join us: parking is limited, so carpooling is encouraged.
