Announcing the Winners!
Your best shots made the 2021 North American Butterfly Photo Contest especially challenging for our judges! (Click the link/text to see all of the winners.) After several rounds of judging and scoring, they selected Band-celled Sister by Cecil “Woody” Wingfield as the Grande Prix Winner. This is Woody’s first photo finalist, and what a fantastic photo it is.
Every picture tells a story; so, our goal is always to have a winner that engages viewers—that draws them in—and shows them something new or interesting about butterflies they may not have known before.Of course, the photo has to be technically outstanding as well. This pristine, perched Sister practically glows, as the sun shines through its wings, illuminating them like stained glass. Furthermore, it seems to be studying the photographer, who was absolutely focused on it.
Who can guess what will capture our judges’ eyes or speak to their hearts? Perhaps it will be one of your photos next year; so, make plans to spend as much time in the field as possible with your camera in hand, over the next twelve months. You could be the one to net $500 and a permanent place on the wall of fame at the National Butterfly Center!

Apache Tree Planting
Thanks to a generous grant from Apache Corporation’s Tree Grant Program, staff from the National Butterfly Center with student volunteers from La Joya High School’s Society for Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) planted 200 trees at Pixie Preserve, as part of our native habitat restoration plan for this new-to-us property.
We are pleased to be first-time partners with Apache Corporation, which has provided more than 4.8 million trees to organizations like ours over the years, and to have the assistance of the bright, enthusiastic young people in the SHPE program; both of whom have contributed so much to our efforts and our organization.
