Wednesday evening was the third annual Cambridge Moth Ball, held at Kingsley Park on Fresh Pond in Cambridge. The Massachusetts Butterfly Club was invited to staff a table at the event.

The weather forecast called for some rain earlier in the day, but the thunderstorms held off until about 4:00 pm -- at which point the rain poured down for about 45 minutes. We were able to set up under dry skies, but on top of wet grass, and the event went off as scheduled, starting with early access for families with small children at 6:30.

MBC members staffing the table -- Linda Graetz, Kim DeAndrade, Mark Rosenstein, Lisa Wolfe and myself -- spoke with many interested attendees. Most of the folks who stopped by the table played the "Moth or Butterfly?" game -- viewing photographs of moths and butterflies and guessing which were moths and which butterflies -- and everyone had a great time. Calvin Yang provided the prizes, Ring Pops, which were a big hit with the winners young and old.

We had great engagement with many knowledgeable and interested Moth Ball attendees, including over 40 people who left their email addresses to get more information about the club.

Several sheets of varying size were hung and lit to attract moths, and while conditions were not ideal, many moths (and other creatures) were seen. Observations are recorded at iNaturalist, here: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/moth-ball-2026.

It was a lot of work and a lot of preparation, but it was also a great time for us. I have high hopes that we'll be able to participate again next year.

Thank you, Peter!  You were the driver behind this success --- thanks to all the time and hard work you put into it.  The Moth vs. Butterfly game was a big hit for sure!  Fun evening.  Look forward to next year.
Linda
