First off, a big thank you to Wayland Conservation Commission member Shannon Fischer, who did a fantastic job on making the Sedge Meadow trip this weekend a success: from introducing me to the area last year and showing me that it is a rich habitat for butterflies to drumming up interest in the Wayland area.
I've fallen behind on reporting my field trips over the past month, in part because I've been focusing on acquainting myself with the Sedge Meadow area.
During June, I visited Sedge Meadow 10 times, and saw 24 different species including:
Bronze Copper
Silver-spotted Skipper
Eastern Comma
* Banded Hairstreak
* Red-spotted Purple
* Viceroy (caterpillars)
* Red Admiral
Monarch
European Skipper
Painted Lady
American Lady
Zabulon Skipper
American Copper
Azure (sp)
Mourning Cloak
Tiger Swallowtail (sp)
Pearl Crescent
Eastern-tailed Blue
Tawny-edged Skipper
Orange Sulphur
Common Ringlet
Peck's Skipper
Clouded Sulphur
Cabbage White
Species listed with an asterisk above were first seen during Sunday's field trip.
I plan to continue visiting Sedge Meadow and we may try to schedule another field trip later in the summer.
Historically, this has been the site of a second flight of Bronze Copper in late August/September. In the meantime, I'll keep posting my trip reports.
