Butterflies in general remain elusive in our neck of the woods, so we weren't optimistic about being able to add a species to the October Derby list. But today, in addition to a few Clouded Sulphurs, we found one very fresh Eastern Comma at a tree farm with diverse habitat in Ware.

Can fellow Mass Leppers please confirm that it was Frank Model (I think) who started the October Derby concept?  Also, I'd like to know how many years it's been going on. I know the information is out there somewhere, but personally I've lost track. I want to include a blurb about the Derby in the October newsletter for Ware River Nature Club.  Thank you!

Searching this group brought up that it looks like it started by Frank back in 2006?
