Lisa Wolfe, Ashby Loshin and I went to Horn Pond Mountain this morning to see the Juniper Hairstreaks. We arrived about 10:30 and walked up the steep rocky trail, after a brief look at the plateau next to the parking lot. The three of us saw at least ten Juniper Hairstreaks as well as one or a few each of Brown Elfin, Juvenal's Duskywing, Spring Azure, American Lady, Eastern Tailed Blue and Black Swallowtail.
Lisa and Ashby had to leave after about an hour; I was on my own for a bit before linking up with Andrew and Lauren Griffith, who arrived about the same time Lisa and Ashby left.
Michael Newton, Garry Kessler and one other joined us shortly afterward.
We saw a lot of butterflies today, including:
25+ Juniper Hairstreak
2 White M Hairstreak
2 Gray Hairstreak
3 Eastern Pine Elfin
3 American Copper
6 Brown Elfin
2 Painted Lady
8 American Lady
9 Eastern Tailed Blue
10+ Spring Azure
4+ Black Swallowtail
3+ Eastern Tiger Swallowtail
1 Clouded Sulphur
1 Cabbage White
Lauren spotted a female Juniper Hairstreak ovipositing on the lower branches of a juniper tree and Garry and Andrew took macro photos of one of the eggs.
