Got a few ok photos of a first instar Spicebush Swallowtail caterpillar eating the egg after emerging.  They are mighty small and the photos are heavily cropped.  They are just about as good as I could do without cutting off the leaf, bringing it inside and setting up more serious macro equipment.  The last photo is a size comparison with a standard lightning cable from an iphone.

Andrew:

Good Spicebush Swt Pics! Cats out of egg are so small they are not able to generate enough silk to make their first protective leaf fold and must tough it out more or less totally exposed for several days until a bit larger. Nonetheless, the tiny cats will wander and spread out their wee foliage damage!! So future inspections require great care so as not to brush them off and be lost. Safest is to wait until the first tiny fold can be located without handling.
