It’s estimated that New York State has lost between 30-40% of its
volunteer firefighters since the start of the decade.

numbers are wildly misleading though - many of those FDs have 1 call
per week - no way they will ever have fulltime staffing - people would
be bored to death
maybe if they increase the benefits and cut out the BS calls at 2 AM
they can get more staffing - more integration between FD and PD and
EMS could be good also
ps - the rock bottom staffing at any FD is 1 person -

person to shoot a gun or do cpr or first aid - so - worse comes to
worse - 1 fire truck and 1 radio and 1 person is the bottom line -
unless we are going to switch over to robots
