Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP)
Facilities: Massport has standardized ARFF procedures across all three
Massport-owned
airports in order to enhance safety and coordination efforts. This
allows Massport Fire-Rescue
to leverage additional resources from across the Commonwealth for use
at Hanscom Field.
Massport Fire-Rescue began permanent, full-time operations at Hanscom
Field in November
2015. Design of a new ARFF facility began in 2016 and staff moved
into the facility in 2019.
The former CBP facility was an aging trailer on the east side of the
airfield. To meet updated
Customs and Border Protection facility guidelines, a new facility was
completed in 2019 and
staff moved into the facility in 2020.
In 2025, Massport Fire-Rescue conducted a full-scale emergency
exercise that included nearly
150 Participants. Mutual aid partners including police, fire and EMS
from Bedford, Concord,
Lexington, Lincoln, Waltham, Action Ambulance, Armstrong Ambulance and
the Hanscom
Air Force Base Fire Department were active participants. In addition,
Massport installed solar
panels atop the roof of the facility. In 2026, Massport will conduct
a tabletop exercise and add
a trailer for additional personnel sleeping quarters at the ARFF
facility. Massport will conduct
a tabletop emergency exercise in 2026.
. Security at Hanscom Field is conducted
by Massachusetts State Police (“MSP”) Troop F. The MSP and Massport
staff regularly hold
exercise drills incorporating real world scenarios. In 2025, Massport
conducted a hurricane
emergency preparedness tabletop exercise for employees and tenants.
