do the private ambulance companies in southern california upstaff
during red flags?

private ambulance companies provide all of the ambulances for los
angeles county fd and most of southern california iirc

(the following info is from fire fandom - it might not be 100% accurate)

the only major FDs that operate their own ambulances are

Los Angeles City - approx 100 fire ambulances

Long Beach FD - (10 ALS ambs + 5 BLS ambs)

Pasadena FD - 8 E + 2 L - all are ALS - plus 5 als ambs

Burbank FD - 3 ALS ambs

Glendale FD (9 engines with 1 FF/PM each (or all eng with 2 ff/pm
each) + 6 BLS ambs)

Anaheim FD (2 PM squads + 9 BLS ambs)

Costa Mesa FD (has 3 BLS ambs staffed by private amb company EMTs)

Huntington Beach FD - 8 als engines + 6 BLS ambs

Orange County FD runs 61 paramedic engines + 5 PMA engines + 9 als
ladders + 2 pm squads

Riverside County FD operates 82 engines and 11 aerials - unknown if
any are als - they also run 2 medic patrols + 10 medic ambulances

Riverside City FD operates zero ambulances - they are provided by AMR
- FD has 70 people on duty 24/7 with a minimum of 17 trained as medics

San Diego City FD operates 52 engines and 13 ladders 24/7 - each has
at least 1 ff/pm on board - Falck provides the ambulances

San Diego County FD owns approx 25 ambs - 7 are staffed by AMR (6 are
als) - the rest are staffed by County FD staff

Ventura County FD operates 13 als engines and 2 als ambulances -
apparently they get alot of support from private ambulance companies

San Bernardino County FD operates 93 engines and 13 ladders + 15 medic
squads + 37 medic ambs + 2 leased medevac helos - ( approx 25 of the
engines are ALS )

we can see that the FDs in southern California are deeply involved in
providing EMS / ambulance service - so it stands to reason - if the
private ambulance companies can upstaff during red flag events - they
can take a large load off the FDs - in theory - maybe ems calls drop
like a rock during red flags - not sure about that

bottom line - if an ems call during a red flag gets handled by 1 or 2
private ambulances versus 1 fire truck and 1 private ambulance - then
obviously you will have many more fire units available for handling
fires
