somerville is now reporting 2 and 1

today westwood was 1 and 1

weston was 1 and 1 also

apparently westwood and weston will page offduty firefighters to staff
the stations when they send 1 or 2 units out of town - this is unique

other communities might call in off duty staff by telephone or app -
some might ban the practice - boston never calls in anyone that is
offduty unless a nuke exploded (except for maybe C1 and C2 on huge
fires - and maybe some specialty staff)

the general rule for metrofire FDs seems to be that mutual aid should
not require the hiring of any extra staff - ie no callbacks - no
overtime on the fly - this has evolved over the last 50 years - in the
1970s arlington would blast the airhorns on 2nd alarms and greater -
that would activate all the offduty staff - appparently that policy
was deep sixed somewhere along the line - not sure why - seems dumbly
- very dumbly - especially for disaster fires - like what LA and Fall
River just had
