Tom Sayers just e-mailed me to report that he has had no luck relocating
the Great Gray Owl in Hanover, NH. He and two other birders are working
the swamp off the Appalachian Trail as well as surrounding fields, but
no luck. They've been there for about 3 hours.

Obviously, this tough bird to find. I haven't had the opportunity to go
up and search, but it appears this bird must be covering a relatively
large area, and much of the area is forested, but with some fields and
trails criss-crossing the area. It may also be inactive during the
midday and may only become a bit more active at dawn and
dusk....depending on how hungry it is.

As Tom stated in his last e-mail, "If they were all slam dunks the
thrill would be gone".

I took over the "marsh watch position" as Tom was leaving, and stayed till around 5:40, with no activity except for a fly over of a Pieleated Woodpecker, a squadron of curious Chickadees, and a couple of Golden-crowned Kinglets, but the Great grey was a no show into the darkness.
