Subject: Sun Banding

Had high hopes the rain would wait to arrive no earlier than 11 am -
morning was overcast & no breeze which is great for the nets being not
seen - in early light around 6:40 am, an Am Bittern [a 1st] flew out of
the marsh, a Gt Horned Owl was calling near the house, a Winter Wren was
singing a full song along with Wht-thr Sparrows & other Carolina Wrens
pre-sunrise - call notes of the juncos, goldfinches, House Finches &
Yellow-rumped Warblers everywhere, many Turkeys were chatting from the
pines & scaling onto the lawn- basically still excited about banding the
Pine Siskin from yesterday, I envisioned a busy morning with all this
early activity. Most of my crew were there ready for a busy morning but
also my son, daughter & granddaughter arrived to be part of this banding
experience - granddaughter 1st time. Right off we had Swamp & Song
Sparrows, Goldfinches - then an Am. Robin to band before the showers
arrived way earlier than desired - quickly closed the nets.Even so,
these several birds for her to see, watch the extraction process, hold &
compare the bulk of a Robin to the small Goldfinches was something she
wants to come back from Ct another day to experience again & again.
