Hello birders,
As spring is getting truly underway, I wanted to extend a heads up from Mount Auburn Cemetery about work going on at Hazel Dell, aka the Dry Dell. As some of you may have already noticed, there is construction work relating to the installation of ADA-compliant walkways and a small performance pad going on, and the area will most likely be closed off during much of April and May. You should still be able to travel along Indian Ridge Path and other adjacent pathways, but we apologize for the inconvenience. In the end, not only will we have made a primary birding area accessible for all birders, but the planned addition of more native plants will provide food and habitat for the insect life that provides fuel for all those migrating warblers and resident breeding birds. So it will be worth the temporary closures this spring to provide benefit for years to come.
One other small note: the parking areas across from the administration building marked for Office Visitors and for Staff are not good places to park when you are coming to visit for several hours, even early in the morning. You are welcome to drive throughout the cemetery and park on any road that does not have a green line painted down the middle*, keeping all wheels off the grass please. One good parking area is on Elm Avenue, to your right when you come in through the main gate on Mount Auburn Street. :-)
*yes, the green lines are overdue for repainting--hopefully soon!
Happy birding to all,
Regina Harrison, birder and Mount Auburn staff member
