Demolition of historic hotel allowed by the Environment Court
In a majority ruling released on July 29 , the Principal Enviroment
Court Judge Craig Thompson has approved the demolition of major parts
of the 144 year old hotel building. The Masonic Friendly Society aka
"Save the Masonic" , is taking further legal advice, after hearing the
news. The society intend to leave no stone unturned, and is likely to
continue to fight until the very end.
Redback Develop's owners Peter and Gail Thwaites must still obtain
consent for destruction of an archaeological site and wahi tapu from
the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, and negotiate the position of
the driveway with two other appellants.
