Dear all,
We take PRIDE in inviting you to a panel discussion on _‘Queering the Narrative: Understanding Citizenship Through Trans Lives’_, an initiative by the Women and Gender Development Cell at Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Guwahati on Saturday, 8th February, 2020.
The eight states in the Eastern Himalayan ("northeast india") region are mostly neglected if not exoticised even by academic scholars, activists, and civil society at large. This is the outcome of the historic paternalistic attitude of the Indian state at the center toward the people and cultures of the ‘periphery’. The state is inherently a cis-hetero-patriarch and this has hurt the trans lives everywhere. The cis-heteronormativity plus the rampant violence and disregard subjected to the northeast India has put trans people of northeast india at the intersection of multiple oppressive structures, thus pushing them further to the margins of the periphery and forcing them to live precarious lives.
We, at TISS, hope to provide a platform to understand *Transgender Persons(Protection of Rights) Act, 2019*, *National Register of Citizens* and *Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019* and what it means for transpersons as 'north easterner', 'indigenous/tribal', 'ethnic/linguistic minority' and so on.
We look forward to your participation. For any queries and further details please contact
Sapphira at 9612947779 or Suraj at 8080782682.
