i've only just recently learned of the existence of this group, and
have enjoyed going through past posts and seeing what folks have been
up to. thus far have been delaying my own update, but here goes:
crux of it is that i am attempting to pursue a glamorous career in
stage management.
the 05-06 theater season was spent as the stage management assistant
[aka intern] at mccarter theater in princeton, nj. where i got to
spend lots of quality time with some fantastic
writers/performers/directors/designers: ellen mclaughlin [buchbinder's
secret girlfriend], andrew mccarthy [odd duck], tina landau,
christopher durang, beth henley and many others. and served as child
supervisor for their annual production of a christmas carol. a baker's
dozen of 5-12 year olds. seriously.
over the summer, i had a brief stint working at the new jersey opera
theater stage managing their "musical theater under the stars". oh
yes. old showtunes sung by opera singers. nuff said. highlight of
the summer was visiting mr. ken loewit & his diner on sanibel island.
and going out drinking with ken, richard, and my mother. good times
all around.
in august i started work at playwrights horizons [off-b'way theater
company] as their stage management resident [i feel like a doctor] for
three shows this season. currently in previews of my second show
there. i actually am living in katonah [westchester co.] with the
parents of nicki scholtz '01, who are fantastic and delightful and
their generosity is only reason i could take this peanut paying job in
this high cost of living city. most of my time is spent either at work
or commuting, but it's been a great place to be for my first shows in
new york, and i'm digging the joys and pains of being involved in the
production of new work. and working with some very talented peoples.
in an entertaining twist of fate, i am actually returning to wellesley
next month to stage manage wellesley summer theatre's wintersession
production between my 2nd & 3rd show at playwrights, and will be
getting my equity card [joining the actors/stage managers union] in the
process. it's an exciting new career development for me, and i'll just
have to see where it takes me after i finish my last show at
playwrights in april. the fact that i'm getting my card at wellesley
is one of those "it all comes full circle" stories in the montage of my
life, where swelling music is being played in the background. i'm
looking forward to some time back in the bubble, and visiting the many
fantastic alums in the area i haven't seen in ages.
slightly related: if there are any shakers in the nyc area that are
around for the thanksgiving holiday weekend, i also have extra comps to
my current show, a sort of western musical "floyd & clea under the
western sky" for wed at 8, fri at 8, sat 2.30 & 8, sun 2.30 & 7.30.
drop me an email if you'd like to come & how many tickets you'd like.
cause hi, free theater is fantastic.
sweet jesus that was long winded.
but basically encapsulates my life since may of '05.
slavic lovin' to all,
