If you are interested, here is the design brief we gave the
CrowdSPRING community:
HackableCity is a blog that examines the application of hackability
and open source ideas to co-creating our urban society. Our focus is
on the U.S., though we take examples from global cities. What is
Hackability? "Allowing and encouraging people to make an environment
be what they want it to be. Reciprocity between users and designers.
Transparency and graceful responses to unanticipated uses."
The idea of Hackable Cities has really taken off with the advent of
the Government 2.0 movement, which leverages open data and new
participatory web platforms to engage citizens with their cities in
new ways.
Currently this is about transparent government and being able to
access city services and data using technology, but it is evolving to
cities providing technology-based platforms on which citizens create
things they want and need - neighborhood portals, economic trade rings
for artists or freelancers, interest groups providing input into urban
planning, and so on.
You can see examples of some of our writing at
http://hackablecity.com, but 2010 will see this blog really take off
in the City 2.0 space.
HERE IS WHAT WE NEED:
A logo that represents the ideas that underly
HackableCity:
- a strong focus on cities and the urban environment
- citizens making the city into what they need
- leveraging
technology, and the intersection between place and the digital data
about the place
