The Rat Awning over the entrance aludes to Commodore Vanderbilt's first business, so I imagined that the lobby might refer in some way to the second, as you point out, in a moorish style influenced by Art Deco.
Looking at the entryway with its stars, I wonder if it is a homage to the ceiling in the Main Concourse in the same way the Tony Sarg's Movie Theater painting is.
