Internship Opportunity

The office of Councilwoman Rosie Mendez seeks a number of highly motivated and dynamic interns to work on (1) substantive day to day activities and (2) critical long-term projects on issues of essential importance, including, without limitation: affordable housing, land use/zoning, preserving public housing, community development, property taxes and education.

Interns should expect an immersive experience with important responsibilities on major projects including: research, policy analysis, drafting position statements/papers, analyzing projects/proposals, strategic planning, community organizing and other related matters.  Interns should expect to gain a considerable amount of experience in: government and politics, the legislative process, organizing/event planning, policy development/implementation, preserving affordable housing and responding to quality of life concerns. Interns will learn firsthand how government functions and will work on projects that will provide exposure to the following agencies: the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA); Housing Preservation and Development, Department of Buildings, Landmarks Preservation Commission, Board of Standards and Appeals, Department of Environmental Protection and others. Interns will be expected to work a minimum of 8 hours per week while in school and a minimum of 16 hours per week while not in school; we will be as flexible as possible in terms of scheduling days and times that are mutually convenient and agreeable.

Desirable core skills we are seeking include:  proven research abilities, public policy experience, familiarity with land/use zoning processes and regulations, knowledge of affordable housing tax abatement/incentive programs and community organizing.

Those interested in an internship with Councilwoman Rosie Mendez should email the following three items to Chris LaBarge | Legislative & Community/Policy Aide at clabarge@council.nyc.gov: (1) a copy of your resume; (2) a 1 page statement of purpose that explicates why you think this internship will be mutually beneficial for you and our office and (3) a writing sample that best demonstrates your core abilities, interests and personality. We will be in contact with you to schedule an interview.
