To kick off the holiday season and celebrate Thanksgiving, we wanted to share a letter from Masa alumna Erika Flores in which she reflects on what makes her thankful. This is the first of several stories about Masa students and families that we will be sending in the coming weeks.

Dear Friends of Masa,
Masa has greatly influenced me to become the person I am now. I always wanted to attend college, but had no idea how I could. I am the oldest of two, and didn't have an educational role model as both of my parents didn't graduate from college, and didn't have strong knowledge of the educational system here. I also lacked resources and support at my high school. At one point my college advisor even asked, "Why bother?" But I had an American dream just like everyone else, a dream that I was able to realize thanks to Masa.
Masa helped me prepare for my SAT’s, and gave guidance on how to choose the right college. They motivated me not to give up, and gave me role models to look up to. I received a good score on my SAT’s, and was accepted to multiple colleges. They also helped me apply for scholarships, which I received, lifting a huge financial burden from my family.
I couldn't possibly thank Masa enough for everything they have done for me. It motivated me to help students who have dreams like I did, so I returned to volunteer as a tutor for a while which sparked my professional interest in education. I double majored in psychology and creative writing; and this past June, I graduated from the School of Education at Hunter College with dual master’s degrees in Early Childhood Special and General Education with a 3.9 GPA. More recently, I applied to an advanced certification program to receive my board certification in behavioral analysis (BCBA). I am currently a SEIT and ABA therapist.
Masa helped me in so many ways, and continues to support my dreams and goals to this day. My younger brother is now in the process of applying to college, and thanks to Masa I can guide him down the right path. I am now his role model – the one that I never had until Masa came along – and I will continue to serve as a role model to other Masa students.
Sincerely,
Erika Flores |
