Stand up, because we all need to know we're not alone.
When I was a kid Superman stood for truth, justice and the American way. We had national heroes who understood their responsibly as a celebrity, to be role models. If they secretly loved wearing ladies lingerie while taking up the ass in high heels, they had the decency to do it in Europe and not make a secret video of it. Captain America wasn’t ashamed to wear the Red, White and Blue nor was a President afraid to call the Communists out as the evil empire. We looked to the stars with hope and wonderment as we led the world to the moon and once again showed everyone what Americans could do.
When a disaster strikes, no other country gives like we do. The first one’s there, our military leading the way with food, water, medicine and dishing out hope like its candy. As imperfect as we are, to the rest of the world we embodied the principles of hope, freedom, justice and self-determination. A land where a man could make his own way, determine his own fate and have a better chance of equal protection on the law than he would have in his former home country.
Granted, as a nation we had our stumbles and even our moments of downright shame. The slaughter of the American Indian (The Trail of Tears 1838), slavery (The Dred Scott Decision 1857), The Civil War in particular The battle of Antietam 1862 (23,000 dead), the stupidity of the prohibition of alcohol 1920 and World War Two Internment Camps 1942 to name a few.
Yet in the end, we always come to our senses. Granted it may take a while however we’ve always done so. As a people we strive to live up to our ideals as a nation of laws, not men. It is these ideal which inspired countless generations of immigrants to come here and believe in the American Dream. It is not a house, a government entitlement of free stuff or handouts. The American Dream is “equal opportunity” and the rest is up to you.
Somewhere along the line as a people we’re forgetting who we are. We snicker at truth, honor, justice and duty now. Truth has been replaced with political correctness to the point where most of us wouldn’t know the truth if it bit us on the ass. Many of you know what I’m talking about, you can feel it in your heart, that sinking feeling you get when you know you are lost. Even worse, when you’ve lost faith in what you hold dear.
There is one group who has always kept faith with the American people, the American Soldier. In the best of times, in the worst of times, even when we the people have let them down. The unique thing about the all-volunteer American military is, the majority of those who choose this path are true believers in what America is supposed to stand for. These brave men and women have made the safety of you. Me, this country’s highest ideals, their personal responsibility. The 1st Congress (September 29, 1789 ) had the foresight to have the military swear an oath to our Constitution first, then to the Office of the President. To this I say, thank god for small miracles and moments of divinely inspired wisdom.
To my clients who have served their country I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I know many of us have not kept the faith with you as we should have. Even less of us will ever have a clue about the cost to you in mind, body, heart, soul, relationships and even family.
As for the preservation of the American ideals, in the end it may come down to the American Soldier and the Naturalized citizen (Immigrants who have become Citizens’) to remind us who we are.
