Keep Connected UMD

Stay in the know and engaged at UMD

Keep Connected

Jackie Liu, AAPI Community Organizing Student Intern at MICA, gives you the rundown on upcoming programs at UMD's Multicultural Involvement and Community Advocacy office.
Dear Terps,

We value and honor our campus diversity and the Multicultural Involvement and Community Advocacy (MICA) Office is at the forefront of our commitment to ensuring our campus is welcoming and affirming for all. Jessica Liu, student intern at MICA, shares information about programs being offered this month. MICA offers opportunities to learn every month. I encourage you to find ways to get involved and connected with MICA.

April marks Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month and Pride Month here at UMD. Your fellow students and staff in MICA have been hard at work planning an exciting array of events, workshops, and lectures to give the UMD community an opportunity to learn from each other and engage with our rich, diverse community. Please take a moment to check out the calendar of events and join us for some of these fantastic programs.

We’re committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion at the University of Maryland. Multicultural student organizations and MICA create opportunities for us all to be in community with one another. Becoming more culturally competent and developing the skills to be a global citizen is a journey and requires each of us to do our work. We hope that you’ll do your work with us! Take some time to participate in programs with other students across campus and learn and grow together as Terps.

Let’s live into our shared values and commitment to a more socially just campus community.

Patty Perillo, Ph.D.
Vice President for Student Affairs

Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month 2021: So Now What?
This past year has been particularly difficult for BIPOC communities. We have been feeling the effects reverberate as we grapple with systemic inequities and adapt to different contexts. In all that, we are also finding threads of movement, mobilization, and collective action.

The Office of Multicultural Involvement & Community Advocacy (MICA) has worked diligently with a student committee for this year’s Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage month theme: “So Now What?”. Please help us in celebrating their work and the message behind this April’s theme.

The Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community has, at different moments, reckoned with both structures of power/oppression and models of privilege. There are common themes this diverse community continuously comes back to (i.e. Model Minority Myth, xenophobia, anti-Blackness, etc.). While these experiences can feel new in this current moment, we can point to a number of historical moments that highlight a sense of returning. “So Now What?” is a question that prompts continued self- and community-reflection, and also offers an opportunity to understand our work within larger and historic struggles of social justice.

We invite you to join the University celebration of Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPIHM) 2021. This is the 29th year that AAPIHM has been a nationally recognized month-long affirmation of the experiences and contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. Asian International Student Support Space: Ongoing Anti-Asian Hate and Violence within Our Communities
In the last year, over 3,800 reports were made to Stop AAPI Hate. The recent surge of anti-Asian violence and hate, including the recent murders in Atlanta, has generated a lot of fears, anger, and anxiety within the Asian/Asian American, and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities in the U.S. and globally. Some Asian international students may be scared, confused, and angry at what is happening and may want to talk to other international students about their experiences and concerns, as well as brainstorm what we can do to protect and advocate for ourselves and others. The Asian American Studies Program and the Counseling Center want to provide such a support space to hear your stories, share some resources, and stand in solidarity with you to stop AAPI Hate.

CARE to Stop Violence
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). SAAM is a national awareness campaign meant to engage and educate the public about sexual violence and prevention. Through awareness and prevention education, we can change social norms surrounding sexual violence and create a safer campus and community. Keep up to date with SAAM events happening this month by following @CAREUMD on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook

The CARE Office presents the Clothesline Project on Wednesday, April 7. The Clothesline Project is a visual representation of the impacts of sexual and relationship violence on the campus community. This event provides community members with an opportunity to confront the issue of power-based violence by creating and displaying their own messages on a shirt during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Messages can be anything from sharing an experience, messages to perpetrators or victims, and artwork. If using names, no first and last names together; organization names are okay. Due to COVID-19, most of this event will take place through CARE's social media sites. However, if you create a physical shirt, you can hang it up on a clothesline that will be located at Hornbake Plaza on Wednesday, April 7. To learn more or submit a virtual shirt visit: go.umd.edu/clotheslineprojectsubmission.

The CARE Office is partnering with community organization Men Can Stop Rape for this month's CARE in Conversation on Tuesday, April 13. This space provides students the opportunity to explore masculinity and discuss what healthy masculinity means to them. As a reminder CARE in Conversation is a monthly community dialogue meant to bring campus members together to discuss issues related to power-based violence.  You are welcome to eat lunch as we chat on Zoom. The event runs 12:30 p.m. - 2 p.m.; drop in as you are able. All are welcome! RSVP at go.umd.edu/careinconversation
