Subject: SUSTAIN Secondary Trauma Support Group - Please Share Widely!

I wanted to pass along information about a pilot program I'm running this semester, to support students experiencing secondary trauma related to a friend's or loved one's substance use behaviors.  Since resident assistants and Greek students experience a significant amount of substance use in their roles on campus, I thought this would be an ideal resource to pass along to your student populations!

This is a four week, skill-based support group (not therapeutic), where students will learn how to manage their own energies/boundaries/relationships with someone whose substance use behaviors are negatively impacting their wellness.

The goals of this group are:
  • To provide a safe and supportive space to share and process your thoughts and feelings among a group of peers.
  • To build knowledge, tools, and skills to more meaningfully support yourself and your loved ones through these challenges.
  • To create a network of students who have experienced similar challenges related to a peer's or loved one's substance use behaviors.
  • To de-stigmatize substance use challenges so that we may better support each other and ourselves when they arise.
Our group for Fall 2021 will run from 12:15-1:45pm on Mondays: October 11, October 18, October 25, and November 4, with lunches provided for participants.  Registration is limited to 8 students to ensure a meaningful experience for everyone.

While this is a demonstrated need on campus, outreach has been challenging, so I would really appreciate any assistance you can provide!  Students can learn more about SUSTAIN here, and register to be part of the group here.  On the registration form, students will be asked to fill out some basic demographic info, explain a bit about what is bringing them to the group, and to go through some basic screening questions for mental health status, just in case students would be better supported with an additional connection to counseling services.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and feel free to share widely!!  I really appreciate your support with these efforts, and hope to be of service to your students.

All my best,
Madeleine
