In FY 2024/25, The agriculture sector contributed 26.1% to 26.5% to Uganda's GDP, up from 24.1% in 2023/24. In FY 2022/23, agriculture accounted for about 24% of GDP, and 35% of export earnings. The Uganda Bureau Of Statistics estimates that about 68% of Uganda’s working population is employed in agriculture.
The sector is growing, with a 5.1% growth rate in FY 2023/24, driven by food crops, livestock (which contributes ~21% of agricultural value-added), and fishing. Coffee is the leading export, contributing roughly 19% of total export earnings. Other key exports include tea, fish, and horticultural products.

COMMERCIAL COFFEE GROWING IN UGANDA:
In early 2025, the country experienced a significant jump in both volume and value, with figures like a 70% increase in export value over 12 months to February 2025, and a 91.9% increase in value for May 2025 compared to the previous year.
Uganda's coffee exports saw substantial increases, with exports in May 2025 reaching 793,445 bags and earning USD 243.95 million, a significant jump from May 2024.
The country exported 6.57 million bags of coffee worth $1.72 billion between March 2024 and February 2025, representing strong overall growth.
Export Destinations:
European countries, particularly Italy, remain the primary markets for Ugandan coffee, but there is also growing demand from countries like China, the United States, and other African nations.
