Hi Everyone,
Well I am still getting accustomed to Google Groups. For the
most part I love it. Unfortunately posting messages with this feature
means I can’t get creative with my fonts and colors as I like to do,
so we are stuck with bland type until I can figure this out.
ANYWAY……………WALK FOR THE ARTS!! APA’s biggest, and MOST fun,
fundraiser of the year. Yes APA has put the FUN in FUNdraiser! (I
know “cheesy” but I bet you smiled) Today I have taken some time to
attempt to explain the Community Campaign and more than that, how you
as a MMET Guild member fit into this really important event!
There are only 10 days left before the big event, but guess what, APA
will still be taking your donations for at least a week AFTER the
actual Walk. THERE IS STILL TIME!
This is THE most important fundraiser APA has put together.
Unfortunately we tried to “reinvent the wheel” and we made some
changes to the Walk and developed what we are calling a Community
Campaign. The intent behind this new & confusing Campaign was
sincere. We all know that our State continues to operate amid a
severe budget crisis. School programs are being cut at an alarming
rate because the money either isn’t there, or it is running out. The
Community Campaign has been designed to put APA on a path to being
self sufficient, or close to it, so that our primary funding doesn’t
need to come from state money. With larger donors, corporate and
others, APA is hoping to build a nest egg that not only continues to
benefit current APA programs but will be able to step in with money in
the future when the State says they can’t/won’t fund our program any
longer. In order to build that nest egg, the APA Foundation is on a
hunt for the types of benefactors who can and will help with large
monetary donations. Naturally the Foundation wants to solicit help
from its biggest resource, the APA parents. They also asked that we
step up our efforts and push for extra dollars from those people that
we normally ask.
Unfortunately the presentation, delivery and overall packet design
fell flat. Many of us were confused and decided that we could find no
way to get behind asking our neighbors, friends and family for that
kind of money. Going from last year’s request of $250 to $1,000 this
year was a substantial leap! And not a few of you asked, “are they
crazy? In this economy?” and “I don’t know anyone who I can
refer” . Still others of you may have never even seen the Community
Campaign Packet. Let me just reiterate, the intent was sincere; the
implementation needed some work.
So here we are 10 days away from Walk for the Arts with plenty of time
for each of us to gather up some donations. APA gladly welcomes
donations of all sizes, the small ones really add up so remember
ANYTHING will do. And with those people that you know well, you might
tell them they can make a difference by adding $1, $2 or $5 more to
what they originally intended.
I found the letter that came with the packet (the one asking for
money) rather cold and impersonal. My family always sends out letters
to our distant family members, our doctor, dentist and to a few of the
shops we frequent. But we write our own, trying to give it a more
personal touch. I always have my son sign them. Susan West has some
great example letters requesting Walk for the Arts donations in the
APA office so have your student stop by and ask for one.
In summary, with the confusion over this Community Campaign, Walk for
the Arts is coming up a bit short with donations. Some of that may be
attributable to the economy but I’m going to place some of the blame
on a poorly handled Campaign. So please understand, APA needs those
donations, and no matter how impersonal or intimidating that Community
Campaign packet may have been, Walk for the Arts is business as
usual. There is still lots of time left to participate in APA’s
biggest and most important FUNdraiser!
If you have any concerns or questions please don’t hesitate to email
or call me, about this or any other issue you want to discuss.
