GAPPS pico to big for hammerhead?

I just did my first install of Maru on my Nexus 5 hammerhead. I have TWRP 3.3.1 installed on this phone and besides that it has been completely wiped. While I could install maru 0.6.8 I was not able to install GAPPS pico right after that (as described in the guide). I got the message that there was not enough space available. Is there anything that I can do besides doing a repartitioning of my phone?

I fixed it for now by installing the older "20200322" version of gapps pico that still can be downloaded from the opengapps project.

is it also really slow for you? the android system itself lags a lot?
