Mike Burd found a cool one for me yesterday, but I believe it was $75
to purchase after a trial. Any ideas?

I think it depends on what aspect of Garage Band you wish to
duplicate. If you want to record, edit, and mix sounds (including the
tons of free loops on the net), then Audacity is simple and very
powerful. In fact those that try both Garage Band and Audacity have
shared that Audacity is often easier to use to record and edit and mix
sounds, while Garage Band has a wonderful collection of loops already
installed. If you want to have people creating music by mixing loops
together, Audacity works well, but you will need to download free
loops that are out there on the internet (I can provide loop links if
you wish). What I do is listen to loops I like and start collecting a
nice library of instruments in a folder. Then when I wish to make a
background piece of music I just click and drag my sounds I like into
audacity. Each one becomes a separate track that is fully editable
including placement, pitch, volume and many other easy to change
features.

If you are looking for something to create music from tabulature, I
think the Finale products are what most teachers turn to. In those
products (not free by the way) students can drag and drop notes onto a
blank piece of sheet music and then play it to hear what it sounds
like and then re edit as desired.

If there was another function in Garage Band you required, please
share and I will see what I can dig up. I highly recommend Audacity to
everyone regardless of what system they use and will help anyone that
wishes to play with it.
