I have to admit I am a sucker for a good timeline maker. Way back in 2011 Omar Ghosn (the co-founder) and myself decided to review a bunch of timeline generators to find the best one (at the time). You can find all those articles here.
Finally you get to the pricing. The free account will allow you to make a single fully functional timeline, but you cannot embed it into a website or upload your own videos or images. You can add photos that are already hosted someplace on the web and videos (YouTube, Vimeo) already hosted on the web.
Adding an event is all pretty straightforward. Just click that + sign in the bottom left hand corner. From here you the even will appear on the timeline and a new side menu will slide out from the right hand side.
A layered timeline is a graphical visualization of time periods that might or not overlap. Compared to a standard timeline that shows pinpointed single events, the layered timeline accurately expresses the duration/length of whole processes or events. Like in a Gantt chart, each bar/layer represents one process/task, with a start and an end date.
Vizzlo's layered timeline is elegant and very intelligible. All elements are easy to identify: even if your tasks/processes happen at the same time, they get organized into visible overlapping layers, with different colors and sizes.

Timeline Maker AI works best for well-known historical events that you might be able to find information about on search engines. For example, a timeline about World War II or the history of space exploration. It also works well for fictional timelines, like a timeline of future human space exploration.
If your timeline will include content that is only known to you or is not available online (like a project plan that is very specific to your organization or a personal legal case), Timeline Maker AI won't be able to generate an accurate timeline. You can still try the tool and it may serve as inspiration, but you'll likely have to do a lot of editing to tailor the content to your project.
However, the less well-known the topic, the more likely it is that the timeline will contain inaccuracies. For that reason, we recommend double-checking the content when the topic is not well known.
Above the AI-generated timeline, you'll see an Export & Share button that you can use to export and share your timeline in a variety of ways including by link, downloading a PDF or image, and more.
When it comes to making timelines, I either: 1) Spend way too long making one in my go-to diagramming software; or 2) Make one using the built-in shapes and templates(i.e. SmartArt) that ends up looking, well, like SmartArt. I don't have strong design skills, so I almost never try to customize the awesome pre-made graphic templates from Adobe Stock or Envato Elements.
This morning I faced a double conundrum (a 'dubundrum'?) because not only did I need to make a sweet-looking timeline, but I also needed to show a group how to make one for themselves. They don't all use diagramming software but they still may want their figures to be more custom-looking than SmartArt-looking. It was quite the dubundrum.
