Here are 15 battles that changed the course of our lives today. If the other side had won them, the victors might have had entirely different plans for how the world was to be governed and what culture was to be adopted.

The Battle of Muye is an example of a force overcoming the odds and completely changing the course of history. An army of approximately 50,000 Zhou tribe soldiers was wholly outnumbered in their fight against more than 500,000 soldiers of the rulers of the time, the Shang Dynasty.

The Carthaginian general Hannibal is widely described as one of the most outstanding military leaders in history. Though his marching of 80 war elephants over the Alps and Pyrenees is the stuff of legend, it, unfortunately for him and his troops, marked the demise of his campaigns.

The surrender of Yorktown played an integral role in the eventual formation of the United States. One of the most significant battles during the Revolutionary War, the Siege of Yorktown, led to the defeat of British forces, led by General Charles Cornwallis, by a combination of American and French troops.

All of these battles could have had an enormous cultural impact had they turned out differently. From imported goods to architectural and engineering knowledge, different rulers have brought different cultural benefits and disastrous doctrines to entire regions. Did we miss any decisive historical battles from the list? Be sure to let us know.

Sometimes a battle is just one blip in the war, and other times it can shift the course of history. From the rout at Marathon to the Siege of Stalingrad, here are some of the most epic and significant battles in history.

The idea for historical figures rapping against each other was conceived by Ahlquist, who pitched the idea to Shukoff as an improvised show titled "Check OneTwo"; both were working in improv at the time along with Zach Sherwin, who would later become a regular guest on the series.[1] They were met with high levels of difficulty at first and decided that the concept would fare much better as a YouTube series than an improv show.[2] The first three rap battles were each shot on a $50 budget.[11]

On September 26, 2010, the first rap battle was uploaded to YouTube, featuring Shukoff as John Lennon and Ahlquist as Bill O'Reilly.[2][13] The 15th episode, "Nice Peter vs EpicLLOYD", marked the end of the first season. This battle pitted Ahlquist and Shukoff against each other with cameos from all of the characters they had played over the 14 prior episodes. At the end of the battle, KassemG arrives and convinces Peter and Lloyd to continue the battles on their own channel. Epic Rap Battles of History later returned on December 8, 2011, hosted on their new channel (moving from Shukoff's personal channel), ERB, with behind-the-scenes videos on their second channel, ERB2.[14] Both channels were created in 2006, however it's unknown what they were used for until 2011, as the oldest video on ERB is from 2011, and the Wayback Machine's earliest record of the ERB and ERB2 channels is from November of 2011, when they were called ERB's Channel and ERB2's Channel, respectively. Shukoff and Maker Studios also created the official website for the series,[15] where fans could vote on winners for each video, and read short comical autobiographies by each character.

On September 9, 2013, ERB uploaded a trailer video on their channel announcing that Epic Rap Battles of History would return on October 7, 2013 for a third season.[20][21] On October 14, ERB released a second video with Ahlquist voicing Theodore Roosevelt, who announced the upcoming season's schedule.[22] The third season went on hiatus after the release of "Donald Trump vs. Ebenezer Scrooge" on December 19, 2013. In March 2014, an episode of Shukoff's weekly show The Monday Show, published on March 11, and a third announcement video of Epic Rap Battles of History News, published on March 18, confirmed that Season 3 would continue on May 5. "Weird" Al Yankovic, Smosh, and Rhett and Link were also confirmed as guest appearances.[23] The third season concluded on July 14 with the release of "Artists vs. TMNT", depicting the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo in a battle against Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo.

Season 5 officially began on May 2, 2016, with the release of the first battle of the season, "George R. R. Martin vs. J. R. R. Tolkien". ERB released battles every other Monday as of the first half of Season 5.[27] On July 12, 2016, "Alexander the Great vs. Ivan the Terrible" was released. This marked the midseason break.[28] Ahlquist later confirmed they were planning to return mid to late October. Filming began for the second half of Season 5 on September 23. On October 26, Season 5 resumed with "Donald Trump vs. Hillary Clinton". The final episode of Season 5, "Nice Peter vs EpicLLOYD 2" was released on January 9, 2017, where Ahlquist and Shukoff battle against each other once again, as it is a sequel to the Season 1 finale. Following the fifth season, ERB went on an extended hiatus.[2]

This list is filled with battles where one force massively outnumbers another, but few imbalances are as striking as the Battle of Muye, in which an army of around 50,000 soldiers of the Zhou tribes fought against more than 500,000 soldiers of the then-reigning Shang Dynasty, not to mention 170,000 armed slaves. However, not only did the Zhou prove to be superior soldiers, the majority of the slaves quickly defected to the side of the Zhou troops, which led many Shang soldiers to defect as well. The resulting battle led to the end of the Shang Dynasty and the beginning of the Zhou Dynasty, the longest-reigning Dynasty in the history of China.

The Carthaginian general Hannibal is considered one of the greatest military leaders in history, and the march of his war elephants over the Alps and Pyrenees during the Second Punic War is among the most famous military maneuvers of all time. Unfortunately for him, even that had to come to an end, and it did when he met his greatest defeat in the Battle of Zama. It was here that Roman troops under the command of Scipio found a way to defeat his war elephants not by engaging them directly, but by distracting and spooking them before opening ranks and allowing them to charge through harmlessly.

There were many decisive battles during the Revolutionary War. Perhaps the most significant was when the British forces, led by General Charles Cornwallis, were defeated at Yorktown by combined American and French forces. Cornwallis ultimately surrendered, paving the way for the Treaty of Paris in 1783 and the formation of the United States.

Many of the battles on this list are famous, but few have entered our common lexicon in the same way as the Battle of Waterloo. When British and Prussian forces crushed Napoleon's troops at Waterloo, it was the final defeat for the famous French general, whose armies had once seemed unstoppable as they marched across Europe. Today, just about any decisive or particularly crushing defeat may be referred to as one's "Waterloo."

We've just scratched the surface of the many, many important battles that have shaped the history of our world. Let us know in the comments section about any particularly fascinating battles that we might have missed!

This seemingly random skirmish should have been just another battle in a series of long-forgotten skirmishes in the civil wars that consumed the Roman Empire during much of the third century. However, the fact that Constantine the Great won the battle to become the Roman Emperor was a major event in world history.

The Battle of Cajamarca was fought in the Andes Mountains of modern day northern Peru between the Spanish under Francisco Pizarro and the Incas led by the Emperor Atahualpa. It was one of the weirdest battles in history because of the disproportionate numbers the two sides had.

One thing to be aware of, that starter box is very light on cavalry. Many battles of the time had parity between horse and foot, sometimes even more horse than foot! The extreme is probably the battle of Lund (30 years later than ECW) where the Swedes had three times as many horse as foot.

To arms, citizens: The emperor has returned. This time, however, he'll stick around a lot longer than 100 days. A trailer for "Napoleon," the latest historical epic from director Ridley Scott, was just released, and it appears to cover the entirety of the French emperor's career, rather than focusing on just a small part of his life.
