Dear friends and neighbors, Here is the most recent plan for the Community Garden at Market and 28th.

After having spent time at the site during earth day, I realized that we need some shade. Please note that I have added an orchard with fruit trees. I gave them a 12' radios. I think that ought to be enough. I also moved the planter boxes closer together. Now they are 4' apart instead of 5. I also added storage behind the grill and added trees there as well. So, now we have space for 6 large fruit trees.

Please give me your feedback. Now that we have the lot secured and cleaned (you are amazing!) now we can begin to finalize the plan so we can get to growing some food!

Hello
Just a reminder that bees can only travel so far. For orchard/ fruit trees
You have to keep on mind that although there are self pollinating varieties, they not all are s.p.  Most need a pollinator, which allows both varieties to bear fruit. they must also be planted at a close enough distance for the bees to do their job (20' is about the farthest). This shouldn't be a problem at our site. There are also trees know as "fruit salad" trees because they have multiple varieties on one tree. i.e. lemon, orange, lime or a various apple varieties grafted onto a rootstock.
Another thing to jeep in mind about fruit trees is they do need thinning of both fruit and branches (at their species approp time of year),and they get lots of fun insects that need to be watched out for. This is easy to control organically and neither will be too laborious. They are worth all the effort.
