Let's see if we can start some discussion again this year.  I find it helpful to hear what other are finding.  Plus, I need to gloat a little - I was out a few days ago and between 1 bog and 2 side roads, I managed to find all 6 elfins.  I knew I had 5, but confirmed the 6th (aka Henry's) when I got home.  But the highlight was finding a number of Western Pine's.  I think I have them for 3 new squares this year.  Not sure if others are finding them, but they seem to be more abundant this year.  All the elfins to date are fresh or slightly worn, so should still a good time to be searching.

Seen my first Canadian Tiger Swallowtail today.

Good luck.

Nice going Eric, where are you seeing the Westerns?

Awesome! I'm most excited about the Western Pine Elfin records. Not a lot of atlas records for that species. I don't know that the southern extent of their range in NB is that well understood, so if you're seeing pine elfins south of the Miramichi it's a good idea to collect them or get good shots.

Cheers,

John

North of Miramichi along dirt roads.  They seem to be in the same areas I'm finding Eastern Pines.  They all seem to be fresh, so maybe they are just starting to emerge (?).

I have been looking everywhere for the Western Pine Elfin, particularly of route 8 between Miramichi and Bathurst ... alas ... (wanted to complete the set as I found my first Henry's in Chelmsford earlier)

I haven't seen an elfin in well over a week, although weather hasn't been very good?  If weather permits, I hope to get out looking for Bog Fritillaries.  They should be in flight. I'm planning on searching bogs along 8 between Miramichi and Bathurst.
