MCEB Voter Experience Project Underway
With no scheduled elections this year, this is a great time to engage the community in a conversation about the future of voting in Marion County. Even though our first generation voting equipment still has years of useful life we need to start looking towards the future and how we can improve the voting experience in our community.
The first phase of the Project includes forming a study group, made up of a variety of stakeholders and city-county partners. At ithe group's bi-weekly meetings, members will be immersed in the basics of election administration and learn more about the two different types of Election Day voting allowed in Indiana – precinct based or vote centers. Marion County voters currently go to their neighborhood to cast their ballot, but vote centers permit voters to go anywhere in the county.
Being the 12th biggest city in the country and the largest voting jurisdiction in the state does present its own unique challenges, and the study group will share feedback on the costs and benefits of both models in a city of our size. The group’s findings will then be used to draft a report to the Election Board. Community-wide public meetings will be held in the later this year where Indianapolis residents can offer their opinion.
You can stay informed and up-to-date by visiting our new “Voter Experience Project” web page: www.indy.gov/VEP. Study group sessions can also be viewed on WCTY Channel 16 or online at www.indy.gov/channel16.
We are excited to initiate this important conversation and look forward to lots of input!

Meet our newest Friends of Democracy!
Last month, the Marion County Election Board honored six individuals, representing more than 175 years of combined service to the voters of Marion County. They have most recently aided our absentee team by helping voters confined to their home, working in the Clerk's Office during the 29-days of early voting and processing vote-by-mail applications and ballots. Thanks for all your years of service - and we look forward to having all of you back on our team in 2014!
Lula Journey (l) and John Hartsock (r) have been an integral part of our local elections for more than 40 years - each!
Pearl Swanigan (who we all call Ms. Pearl around these parts) has aided the Election Board for at least 40 years.
For almost 20 years, Otamez Jones has been of service to the Election Board, most recently part of our Clerk's Office early voting team.
Julia Lawrence (l) and Angela Cypress (r) have a combined 35+ years working with the Election Board and are invaluable absentee team members!
Do you know what's missing in the photo to the right? YOUR favorite political yard sign! If you have some signs stashed in your garage, basement or attic, we'd love to post them at our Election Services Center. You can bring them to the Election Board Office in the City-County Building during regular business hours.
