Looking Forward
Last month, I had the privilege of attending a naturalization ceremony at Shortridge Magnet High School for Law and Public Policy. More than 80 people became US citizens this day, and as we’ve done since 2009, our staff was on-hand to register these newest Hoosiers to vote. While there I saw a few senior students I met at our yVote! visit earlier this year, and it got me thinking: What will Election Day in Indianapolis look like for these new voters in the next ten or more years?
This is a question we are trying to answer now through our Voter Experience Project, an effort to better understand how we can improve Election Day through technology and other best practices. We’ve convened a group of political party officials, poll workers, officeholders, city-county partners and other community organizations to study the issues and report their findings to the Election Board. We’re about halfway done with our learning modules and their draft report should be ready mid-summer.
Then it’s your turn. We are planning a series of public meetings this fall for you to share your thoughts, comments and opinions so the Board can be fully informed as we explore replacing our aging fleet of voting equipment with newer technology. You can keep updated on the study group’s progress through indy.gov/VEP or use the twitter hashtag #VEP.
I’m grateful for the time and thoughtfulness the study group members are putting into the VEP, and am looking forward to the community conversation this fall!
Marion County Clerk Beth White
Secretary, Marion County Election Board
Marion County’s fleet of voting equipment is nearing its useful life, and its replacement models will need to meet the future needs of our community. Earlier this year, the Election Board launched the ‘Voter Experience Project’ to look at how to improve our Election Day voting experiences through technology and best practices. For a full schedule of study group meetings and materials, visit indy.gov/VEP. Later this year the Election Board will host a series of public meetings so residents can share their feedback – stay tuned for the announcement of these dates!
Meet our newest Friends of Democracy!
Clerk White with Brenda Bell, whose husband Richard (deceased) worked elections for more than 30 years, most recently on the travelling board team. The Board appreciates Richard's years of service.
Frances Marshall (l) and Luvenia Davis (r) have helped the Board for a combined 20 years. They are the definition of bi-partisan spirit often working together on commissioner and early voting teams.
Robert Farber (l) and Gloria Darden (r) have been part of the Election Board team for at least 10 years each! They are absentee rock stars, making sure every valid ballot is received, processed and delivered.

Vice-Chair Patrick Dietrick, Clerk Beth White, and Elections Director Myla Eldridge
Spring Cleaning? We can help!
The Election Board is looking for political yard signs of elections past to spruce up our warehouse. For many years, we’ve collected and displayed signs brought to us – in fact, most made the move from our old warehouse on Gale Street to our new facility in Sherman Commons. To make droping off signs easier, we’ve put a box outside of the east entrance of our Election Services Center located at 3737 E. Washington Street in the old Marsh grocery store. You can also bring them by the City-County Building and leave them with our staff during our regular business hours.Important Dates
