Mystery of FDB file solved

A recent note here asked for help with an "FDB" file.  I'm completely unfamiliar with that format, and asked if anybody know what to do with it.  We got several very promising leads.  Greg Reed won, with his suggestion it could be a Firebird Database file, because now we have confirmation that it does handle the example datafile provided.  The question was actually more complex than I thought, because at least 3 "FDB" formats appear to be out there.

The most elegant suggested solution, from Sergio Larios, was to write a reader routine in R language, but that was a little too complex for this poor old man.

Both Nauha  Barraj and Victor Okpeitcha (the questioner) were together at the recent OceanTeacher Global Academy course in Ostend, where they collaborated on the question, and were able to confirm that the data were in Firebird format.  One positive aspect of this is that Firebird is able to export the data in either Excel or simple ASCII format, which may be easier to use.  I've added Firebird to the MDL software list at http://www.marinedataliteracy.org/basics/software.htm in case you're interested; it's entirely free.
