There are many navigation programs now on the market with great functionality. If you're looking for freeware, the best by far is OpenCPN. In the last major release, they added support for TCP and UDP connections.

Can anyone suggest software that will show the tracks of multiple AIS
targets at the same time, (from what I can see marine traffic will only
track 1 vessel at a time.)
This function is required to plot the area covered for SAR purposes
