Within the span of a few days, Los Angeles went from being unbearably hot to unbearably cold. It was pretty intense! I personally adore the cold, whereas poor Gary gets chilly when the temperature drops to 73. Luckily, we have a lot of cats and dogs to keep us warm. And it's so cute seeing him walk around the house in a puffy coat and scarf. :)
On the business side of things:
I made a mini! It's nasty and punny and sweet, with adult themes that never quite ventures into don't-show-your-kids territory. The original artwork will be available (I think for $20 apiece?) at the Giant Robot 2 Post-it art show in December, but for the price of a greeting card (seven bucks--cheap!) you can have all six images in a little booklet, garnished with about 50 hand-painted accents. What a deal, huh?
This very limited edition mini will debut at LA's CALA show, but you can reserve your own copy with a
pre-order on my website.
Nextly, if you haven't yet seen it, I had a short comic essay up at Electric Literature last month. It chronicles a talk I attended between feminist icons Roxane Gay and Erica Jong, but really it's about the importance of speaking up in uncomfortable situations.
You can read it here.
Lastly, I'm gearing up for some traveling and fun talks, in Portland (with Cheryl Strayed!), Bryn Mawr and more. And if you're in Los Angeles in a couple weeks, I'll be volunteering my time at Skylight Books, recommending some of my favorite books for Small Business Saturday.
Keep an eye on this page, as I update it all the time.
In the meantime, I've been working on a comics memoir about female friendship which I'll be announcing soon (you can see progress shots on
Twitter,
Instagram,
Tumblr and
Facebook), and rearing up for the launch of
Turning Japanese next spring. Exciting!
Thanks for reading, and I hope you're doing well!
Warmly,
Mari
