Se il film venne di fatto proibito, fu perché "tutti i criminali che sostenevano l'impalcatura del terrificante soggetto, anche se vivevano in ambiente americano, erano scrupolosamente e deliberatamente italiani". L'offesa all'italianità costò alla pellicola l'assenza dagli schermi italiani fino al 1947, quando con il titolo di Lo sfregiato ottenne il nulla osta dalla censura, seppure condizionato dal divieto ai minori di 16 anni.
