USB Ethernet Adaptor?

I've got a MacBook Air that I hook up using the USB ethernet Adaptor-
though I can create a USB rule to note the device, I can't access
network based rules even though I've got a non-wireless network
connection.
I'm happy to help with this if there's a way I can provide config info
for the USB based ethernet connection.
