Dear Grange Association member,
An application has been submitted for planning permission for the roadway and land to the south of Sciennes Primary School on Sciennes Road. The proposals are for the “Erection of planters and fencing”. The documents showing the proposals can be viewed on the Council’s planning portal with reference 25/06533/FUL. There is a planning statement that gives more information about the reasons for the proposed installation.

This planning application is part of the wider proposals to close Sciennes Road to all traffic (i.e. including pedestrian and cycle traffic) during school hours to provide a safe space for the primary pupils to access the grounds to the south of Sciennes Road. These proposals are explained in the Council’s recent report setting out the process for introducing an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO) for the closure of the road. That ETRO has not yet been drafted.
The school property is B listed and is in the Marchmont, Meadows & Bruntsfield Conservation Area on the north side of Sciennes Road, and hence just outwith the Grange Association area. The proposed works are not attached to any listed structure and so do not require Listed Building Consent. The boundary with the Grange Conservation Area runs along the centreline of Sciennes Road, so the land to the south of the road is in the Grange Conservation Area and therefore the proposals straddle the two conservation areas.
The closing date for comments on this planning application is 20 February 2026. Please advise me by 9 February if you wish the Association to comment or object to this application, citing your reasons.
Please note that this application relates only to the installation of the planters and fencing, and any comments must relate to planning considerations only (i.e. the appearance, style, fit with surroundings and effect on neighbour amenity such as overshadowing). Any comments concerning the ETRO (i.e. the proposal to close the road to non-motorised traffic) should be submitted as part of the consultation on the ETRO when it is published, to traffi...@edinburgh.gov.uk as explained on the Council’s web pages for “View or comment on traffic orders”.
Details of all planning applications in the Grange area are available from our pages here.
