Subject: Public Toilets in Parks Project Update (The Meadows) - February 2025

Dear Friends of The Meadows,

I am pleased to provide an update on the new public toilet facilities being delivered at The Meadows, including the programme of works and landscape design.

Programme of Works

The planned construction programme has now been finalised:

  • Works Start Date: 26th February 2025
  • Toilet Installation (Module Delivery & Placement): W/C 25th March 2025
  • Works Completion Date: 1st May 2025

Please be aware that works completion date may be delayed depending on utilities connections and external factors outside our control. In addition to these works, lighting works and CCTV Camera installation will take place after the works completion date. We are currently waiting for confirmation from these teams regarding their exact schedule and will update you as soon as we receive this information.

Landscape Design

The landscape specification details on the materials and features that will be installed are provided below:

  • 2x Benches with arm rest in FSC treated wood
  • External Water Tap for trees and plants watering – Pillar standpipe
  • 1x Litter Bin customised for Edinburgh
  • 4x Sheffield Cycle Stand with tapping bar - baseplate fixing
  • Railway Sleeper – Hardwood sleepers
  • Aco Drain to manage surface water
  • Resin Bound Paving

We have looked carefully at how best to connect the new facility with existing paths while balancing accessibility, environmental protection, and the character of the Meadows. We explored various options, including a diagonal path from the lower intersection of Middle Meadows Walk, but this would have required significant construction, leading to greater impact on the tree roots and the wider landscape. Considering these constrains, we are prioritising the use of more sustainable materials, such a boardwalk, which will minimise the extent of the excavations.

Next Steps & Stakeholder Engagement

As we progress with the installation of new public toilet facilities at The Meadows, Inverleith Park, Leith Links, and Queensferry, we are working closely with Parks Officers and on-site teams to ensure works are managed effectively and that the wider public remains informed.

On-site signage and communication will be coordinated with Parks Officers to provide clear updates on construction activities, minimise disruption, and ensure park users are aware of ongoing works.

I appreciate your continued support in delivering this important project and will keep you informed as we progress. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or would like further details.

Best regards,
Marco
