Graphicdesign majors develop a sophisticated approach to creative problem solving and hone skills in typography, image generation, corporate identity, web design, information graphics, three-dimensional design, and motion graphics. Students utilize the latest software and emerging technologies to stay current with the graphic design industry. First and second-year graphic design courses introduce fundamentals of design process, practice, and theory. Foundational courses in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign introduce Graphic Design majors to effective strategies and good work habits for learning software applications. Upper-level Graphic Design courses focus on production of both print and screen media with a project-based approach, challenging students to experiment with typography and image-making as they envision creative solutions to problems. Students in the BS Graphic Design program also take courses in the history of art and design, visual studies courses like drawing and painting, and fulfill general education requirements.

Graphic Design students can pursue advanced elective coursework in web and motion graphic design, environmental graphic design (wayfinding systems, exhibition design, identity graphics), experimental publication design and other interdisciplinary special topics projects. During their senior year, Graphic Design students develop a capstone project through independent study with a faculty advisor, and take courses in professional practice and portfolio development.

The Auburn University School of Industrial + Graphic Design is committed to providing its faculty, staff, and students with outstanding special programs that enrich their student experience and enable them to succeed with both their educational and career goals.

The CADC charges a professional fee to partially defray the difference between state funding and tuition, and the actual costs of our professional programs. Within each program, a professional fee charge of $2,160 is tied to enrollment in specific trigger courses. During semesters when students are enrolled in these classes they will be charged the professional fee.

Through the professional fees, the CADC continues to provide our students with rigorous and relevant academic experiences, which contribute to our programs being recognized as among the best in the nation.

The Graphic Design curriculum has been designed to meet accreditation standards set by SACS and NASAD (National Association of Schools of Art and Design) and is structured to provide students with a course of study that ensures growth and development over time.

Lane's Graphic Design Program is a two-year vocational/technical program leading to either an Associate of Applied Science degree or a Certificate of Completion. First-year courses are open to all students. Room is limited, however, for those who wish to take the second-year courses. Admission into the second year involves filling out an application, providing transcripts, writing a short essay and preparing an assignment. Information about specific dates and requirements will be posted online in this site starting Spring term.

The four-year BFA in Graphic Design helps you build an informed design process that will support you in pursuing real-world design opportunities. Throughout the program you gain a strong understanding of the design principles, theories of communication and strategies for problem solving.

The core Graphic Design curriculum encompasses a range of analytical, formal, sensory and technical design experiences. Sophomores begin exploring visual principles of form, image, color and typography. Conceptual thinking in areas such as communication theory, visual systems and information design forms the focus of the junior year.

Senior year emphasizes design applications, with a range of electives available to expose you to specific areas of graphic design practice. Juniors and seniors can also pursue professional internships over the summer or during the semester.

Applicants must provide official transcripts of all secondary academic work through the most recent grading period. Your counselor may submit your transcript through the Common Application, Parchment, email or mail.

You can use some Advanced Placement (AP), A-Level classes and International Baccalaureate (IB) credits toward RISD liberal arts requirements. First-year students can transfer a maximum of nine credits from AP courses with a score of 4 or 5, A-Level classes with an earned grade of C or higher or Higher Level IB scores of 5, 6 or 7. We will not accept AP or IB credit from art or studio classes.

Plan to take the TOEFL or IELTS well in advance of the application deadline since it may take three weeks for your scores to be sent to RISD by the test agency. It may take up to four days for us to receive Duolingo test results.

The language test requirement may be waived for applicants who have studied in an institution where English is the language of instruction. You must email the Admissions Office at admis...@risd.edu to explain your school history and determine if you are eligible for a waiver.

The work you select should reflect a full range of your ideas, curiosity, experimentation and experience in creating and making. This can include work in any medium, in finished or sketch form, and can be the result of an assigned project or a self-directed exploration.

We strongly recommend that you include some examples that involve drawing from direct observation (rather than from imagination, photograph or video). Since drawing is a fundamental tool for visual makers from initial concept to execution, it is valuable for reviewers to see examples of your experience with and approach to drawing.

Finally, we strongly discourage including excessive visual elements and text descriptions in a single slide submission. These are difficult to view and are likely to exceed the allowed submission limit.

You can submit additional angles or detail shots of some works across multiple slide submissions, combined into one composite including no more than three images, or in a single video upload. Editing is an important part of curating your portfolio. You may need to devise creative solutions to best show your work within the limits of submission guidelines.

While we encourage you to adhere to the rules of good writing, we look for applicants who are not afraid to take risks in their expression. Please don't hesitate to use a writing style or method that may be outside the mainstream as you express a distinctive personal position in your essay.

Letters of recommendation can be very helpful to your application. One letter is required, although you may submit as many as three. Recommendation letters should be written by teachers or other professionals who have firsthand knowledge of your art or academic achievements and can comment on your potential as a student.
