The Maqetta team of open source volunteers intends to turn off the online hosting part of Maqetta.org on Jan 31, 2014.

IMPORTANT: If you have important files stored on Maqetta.org, you should download the files to your local system as soon as possible. To download your projects, in the Maqetta application, go to the Files palette. Click on the "download entire project" icon to save your current project. Then switch to each of your other projects, and "download entire project" for these other projects. If you accept the default download options, each project will be a complete, self-contained web application that you can install and run from a localhost web server.

The Maqetta application will still be available for download (for running via localhost or installing on your own server) and the open source will still be available at GitHub.

It has been a fun ride for the Maqetta team to partner with the community since Maqetta.org was first announced in April 2011. Since then, Maqetta.org has been providing free web hosting of the Maqetta application. In April 2013 IBM decided to suspend its contributions to the Maqetta project. Since that date, the Maqetta project has not seen any open source updates since April 2013. Due to lack of ongoing contribution, non-trivial maintenance costs, and declining usage of Maqetta.org, the Maqetta open source team concluded it was time to end the free online service.

Thanks to everyone who has been contributing to and using the Maqetta application.

Hi Jon ,

That would be a serious loss , I think Maqetta is a unique package including the hosting!
Would it be an idea to offer a hosting package.
For example everybody having a site at Maqetta currently, donating $100 fro a 3 or 5 year plan.
New entrants could also opt for this plan

Sincere,
Rinse

Hi Rinse,
Sorry I was slow in responding. Unfortunately, it's not possible to change decisions about closing down of the Maqetta.org hosting service. These decisions were made many months ago. We have kept the service going until now to give people time to complete projects they might have been working on, but we want to close down the service because non-trivial maintenance issues do happen, and the people who do such maintenance have been reassigned to other projects.

Note that people will still be able to download the software to run locally or install the software on their own servers. Down the road, someone else might post a derivative version of Maqetta (probably called something else). I know of at least one active effort, but I have no idea about the likelihood or the timing of such a service.

Once again, we appreciate the help and support that the community gave to the Maqetta open source effort and the Maqetta.org service.

Can you at least change the "Launch" button on the maqetta.org homepage to "Download" and remove things like "Long-term vision: everyone runs a cloud version of Maqetta (i.e., run off server)" from the documentation?

I wasn't able to find any other free and easy solution that does the same as Maqetta and even if development stopped maybe there will be someone in future interested in picking up the work?

Piotr,
Thanks for the suggestions! We changed the "Launch Maqetta" button to a "How to run Maqetta" button. Instead of posting an alert, it now takes you to a new page that tells the user to download a release ZIP and follow the instructions in the Readme.html file.

We removed a section from the FAQ that talked about the security of files saved on maqetta.org since that it not relevant any more.

However, we didn't remove the "Long-term vision" section from the docs because that would require rebuilding the application and posting a new release, which would take much more time and effort (e.g., having to go through a full testing cycle) than the web site updates we just did.

Regarding someone else picking up the work, sorry, no one has come forward yet.

Hi,
sorry coming so late to the party, I did setup a new domain x4dojo.org which is primarily about a complete web-driven IDE (PHP based!) called 'xide', using also Maqetta for UX, but also as little Dojo resource site.
However, I did create a Maqetta - Java instance, just for toying but we can migrate and host all previous projects of  Maqetta.org for free. Please get in touch if you like.

I think its not conceivable to change choices about shutting down of the Maqetta.org facilitating administration. These choices were made numerous months back. We have kept the administration set as of recently to give individuals time to finish ventures they may have been chipping away at, however we need to close down the administration on the grounds that non-minor upkeep issues do happen, and the individuals who do such support have been reassigned to different activities...
