Upgrade to the latest version of gdal2tiles.py, from maptiler svn.
BTW there is no need to use PIL and 'antialias' rendering unless you
need to make the tile tree merging which is described in the thread:

In that thread I am also recommending upgrade of gdal2tiles and you
find there the direct link to SVN.
The default 'average' scaling algorithm produce very good results for
most maps, and there is no problem with that one - the overview tiles
are rendered always correctly, if you have GDAL 1.6+.
