Poor resolution at high zoom levels

The source image for the overlay I am using (of an old map) has a good
resolution even when zoomed close in enabling me to read the text on
the map.

When I run the image through MapTiler it recommends rendering it for
zoom levels 13 - 16. If I override this and make it (for example) 1 -
16 the output when zoomed in on the map is of a much lower resolution
than the source image?

Can anyone suggest what I am doing wrong?

The source image is:
http://www.southdevonaonb.org.uk/cordialemapping/kmzdata/withtiledoverlays/20.png

The KML is here:
http://www.southdevonaonb.org.uk/cordialemapping/kmzdata/withtiledoverlays/20/doc.kml

Thanks!

Hi,

Do not use Mercator tile profile for Google Earth.

Instead choose directly in the beginning of the MapTiler wizard that you want to render the Google Earth KML SuperOverlay. Then quality is going to be better as there is no raster rescaling involved.

The Google Earth uses different map projections (platee-carre) then Google Maps (mercator with fixed zoomlevels: http://www.maptiler.org/google-maps-coordinates-tile-bounds-projection/).

If you use the Mac App Store version of MapTiler (itun.es/ch/jFlyJ.m) or our commercial MapTiler Cluster (http://www.maptiler.com/) you will get even higher quality KML with directly optimised hybrid (jpg+png8) tiles - so the map will be smaller and will load faster.

Best regards,

Petr

Thanks! I will try what you suggest and let you have some feedback.

Hi Petr,

The solution that you suggested for the resolution worked great, but I now have a different problem that didn't exist before in the previous method that I used.

For my overlays (old maps) I used Google Earth to geo-locate the source image in order to get the correct co-ordinates to enter into MapTiler and then followed the different process that you suggested.

These are the KML files generated by MapTiler:

http://www.southdevonaonb.org.uk/cordialemapping/kmzdata/withtiledoverlays/19x/doc.kml
http://www.southdevonaonb.org.uk/cordialemapping/kmzdata/withtiledoverlays/20x/doc.kml
http://www.southdevonaonb.org.uk/cordialemapping/kmzdata/withtiledoverlays/21x/doc.kml
http://www.southdevonaonb.org.uk/cordialemapping/kmzdata/withtiledoverlays/22x/doc.kml
http://www.southdevonaonb.org.uk/cordialemapping/kmzdata/withtiledoverlays/23x/doc.kml
http://www.southdevonaonb.org.uk/cordialemapping/kmzdata/withtiledoverlays/25x/doc.kml
http://www.southdevonaonb.org.uk/cordialemapping/kmzdata/withtiledoverlays/26x/doc.kml
http://www.southdevonaonb.org.uk/cordialemapping/kmzdata/withtiledoverlays/27x/doc.kml

The issue now is that although the overlays are 'roughly' in the correct location they are not accurately lining up with the map below (as they were in Google Earth) and in some instances the images appear to be 'squashed'.

The same error is replicated in all the tiled overlays that I created with MapTiler. I would be very grateful if you could suggest what if anything I am doing wrong to cause this corruption?

Many thanks...

Update: I realise that I have been creating the tiles with a Google Earth projection rather than for Google Maps, which is where I want to use them... what is the process for achieving the best resolution tiles and KML for use in Google Maps?

Or is it possible to warp the output that I currently have (in the Google Earth projection) to a Google Maps Projection?
