Reading of raster failed

When processing to PNG-files a larger number of ECW-files (entire Denmark) the process stops after 37 % with the message ""reading of raster failed".

1) What could be the cause -bad sectors? 

Both the ECW's and the produced tiles are stored on a USB3.0 external hard disk - could that be a problem?

2) If I were to split up the tile production into to half sections - how do I ensure that tiles on the border between the to sections are fully rendered -. meaning that I could just
  merge the resulting tile directories with no visible effect on the border.


I had a forced reboot of the machine after 57% last weekend.

When I restart with -resume, the process seems to jump ahead somewhat but never to 57% onwards, rather it reached 7 % quickly and moves quicker onwards - until the crash above.

So - I woudl appreciate if that Maptiler writes more logfiles and more information to the user on the nature of -resume progress :=)

Hello Martin,

the answer from our development team is following:

There is a problem with the ECW format - its driver is proprietary. 
Most of the time the problem is the insufficient memory (RAM) to process the requested part of the rendering.
We are working on the solution.

Hi Martin

OK - is their an estimate of a bug-fix? 

And/or - how do I subdivide Denmark into smaller regions of ECW and merge the produced tiles - without getting any effect along the borders of the regions.

Please take this bug serious.

You are leaving me with no options and no log files to troubleshoot - and the resume option itself takes hours to get to the same point to the point of failure - meaning it would take months to narrow down any erroneous ECW-file - if that is the error at all.

You are selling a very pricey piece of software and I have spent many hours to make it work for a 44.000 square kilometer area - without success.

Small part's work (5000 km2) - but  my customers are not happy with me for not being able to provide a solution.

So - please step up, Maptiler!

Hello Martin,

could you please submit a bug report e.g. right when you start with the rendering process. Instructions are available at http://www.maptiler.com/how-to/submit-report/.

It seems like there is a problem with a proprietary format, which we don't have the direct access to. The resolution would require a significant amount of time.

If you won't be changing the zoom level, it should be working though. You could also split it into batches of a smaller count and render it into MBTiles. The MBTiles can be then merged in GUI or according to the manual (http://www.maptiler.com/how-to/merge-mbtiles/). Side effects on the borders should be minimal or almost none with PNG32 format and it depends on the input format.

Hi again

Well, I can't submit a report in a hurry since it can take a week in rendering before it crashes.

Today Maptiler crashes with a "Render Failed" after running a week with 93 % done - without any hint whatsoever of what  - or which ECW if any - caused the error. 

Using MBtiles doesnt seem to solve anything since my goal is to produce PNG-tiles in directory format and mbtiles is not an options as input.

So - I'm back to my original ECW-problem and statements on your part like :

"It seems like there is a problem with a proprietary format, which we don't have the direct access to. The resolution would require a significant amount of time."  - doesn't give me any clue of when a resolution of the problem is coming - if at all.

Does Maptiler support ECW format or not?

If not, maybe Maptiler should throw in the towel and return the software fee.
